September 30th 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries (gravel road ..again)
WEATHER: Cloudy start, but brightened up .. still mild
Same location as yesterday (generally) with a good selection of birds again. Today the highlight was probably the small flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers that hung around for quite some time, giving me shot after shot as they foraged in the low branches of a thicket.

September 29th 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries (Gravel Road)
WEATHER: Duller start then sun & cloud
Looking out this morning I could see that it was slightly overcast, and virtually zero wind ... my favorite kind of bird photography weather, so yet again I headed to my favorite local area, which is 10-15 mins from my house, so lets hope for some avian activity !!
Within a fairly short span of time I am hearing a couple of different birds (using Merlin), and I was fortunate to have one of them drift into my shotting zoon. It was a nice looking Hermit Thrush, so all going well.
Next stop .. another km further on, in a small woodlot I hear and see another few birds ... This time I kinda hit my jackpot, as one of them was a FOY Gray-cheeked Thrush.
Tip of the Day: What light is “best” may vary. On a sunny day, early morning just after sunrise and evening just before sunset are prime times. These so-called golden hours are well known for landscape photography but the same principles apply to nature photography, and

especially to birds when we want to show off some of their dazzling colors. The light at this time is more flattering, and the low sun angle accentuates color and detail. Besides, early morning is when many birds are out and about.

September 27th 2024

LOCATION: Guelph Line & Hespeler
WEATHER: Slightly cooler, but mainly sunny
First stop this morning was along some back roads just off Guelph Line, with some reasonable success. My targets were migrating Warblers, but I only saw the one species,, the Yellow-rumped, but I did get a few other goodies  ... as below.
On my way back down the 401 I headed to Hespeler Mill Pond, where I had tried yesterday as well, for the local rarity, that has been hanging out there for the last few days. My visit yesterday was a flump, but today the special visitor was out in the open, but a long ways off .. probably 150 meters or so, so the shot I have posted was a massive crop.

September 23rd 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries (Gravel Rd)
WEATHER: Misty and damp
This morning I went back to the exact same spot as yesterday, but today at this spot, there was zero happening. I suppose there was no sun, so no bugs to attract the birds.
However, after this minor failure I drove a few hundred yards further along this gravel road, and used Merlin to see if there was anything around. The app was picking some sparrow activity, so used a bluetooth speaker and some sparrow calls to see if I could draw something into range. Almost immediately a small flock of mixed sparrows showed up .. Swamp, Song, Chipping and, as I discovered later, a couple of Lincoln's. As well as the sparrows, a Nashville Warbler gave me a shot, but it was a very short visit ... maybe less than a minute.
Tip of the Day: Be aware of shadows on the bird you are photographing, caused by the angle of the sun or when you’re not in the best position. Often, in the field you don’t notice a shadow, but because shadows are more obvious in photos, it’s good to watch specifically for shadows and adjust your position to avoid them when possible

September 22nd 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries (Gravel Rd)
WEATHER: Misty start then sun
Over the past month or so I have come to really like this spot. I sit in my car with drivers window down and keep an eye on a small thicket, that gets the sun first thing in the morning, This morning I sat there for about 90 minutes and several birds popped into the open. I suspect the bugs are active in the early morning heat, and in turn the birds use the opportunity for a snack or two, Coupled with that there are a couple berry bushes that the birds also seem to like.

September 21st 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries (gravel Rd and Grass Lake)
WEATHER: Sun & cloud
Picture
Savannah Sparrow
First stop was the gravel road, with Merlin picking up zero and my eyes.... the same result, so based on some personal  history about this part of the month in previous years I headed to one of my favorite spots along West Dumfries Road, and again zero, other a few Robins up in the trees.
Next stop Grass Lake where I spotted a couple of Sandhills lazing around in the field, and a few Savannah Sparrows along the fence line. I also heard some Eastern Meadowlarks, but couldn't spot them. I thought it odd that there would be still some around, but maybe worth checking again in the coming days.
Tip of the Day: Weather plays a huge role in the migration. Moderate winds and gusty conditions keep most songbirds grounded., the greatest concentration of migrating birds tends to occur a day after the passage of a cold front.

September 19th 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries (gravel rd)
WEATHER: Continuing sunny and hot
It was another of those days with almost no breath of wind, so it was interesting to, as well as look for birds in motion, to keep an eye on leaves, and branches moving, which in turn can mean a bird is close or has just left the branch etc ...

September 16th & 17th 2024

LOCATION: Day1-Burlington Day2-North Dumfries
WEATHER: Sunny and hot
Our jaunt down to the Burlington area was a bit flat, especially at our first stop (Thornapple), but we did see the Orange-crowned Warbler, so that made up for the rest of the visit. The initial idea of this area was to get a look at and hopefully a few shots of a rare visitor (Wilson's Phalarope) that had been hanging out at Valley Inn for a few days, but my luck wasn't in, as it wasn't there this morning. Oh well !!

September 15th 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries (gravel road)
WEATHER: Sunny
When I have limited time on any particular morning I take a short drive to one of my local gravel roads, and sometimes I see a few birds. This morning was one of those mornings, with several songbird sightings. Nothing too unusual, but I was still very happy with the outcome images.
On top of some birds I had 3 individual Racoons cross that road, at 3 different times over the course of about 45 minutes.

September 12th - 14th 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries back roads
WEATHER: Pure sun, and hot later in the day

Turkey Vulture
Birding around my local area has been a little slow, but still a few butterflies around, but they are difficult to get in a static position, but the Monarch (which was one of several I spotted in one area), gave me a shot or three !!.

I had been hoping for a few Warbler shots, but even though I saw 3 or 4 , I never once pointed a camera !! Maybe my luck will change in the coming days.

September 11th 2024

LOCATION: Cambridge & Burlington
WEATHER: Sunny
Picture
Red-eyed Vireo

Another, weather wise, good looking day, so initially headed to my local spot near Cambridge, but after an hour of listening etc, nothing showed up. Ended up cutting my losses and headed back to Thornapple Loop lust outside Burlington to see if that would be any better.

Thornapple was a also a bit quiet, other that a short period where several birds passed through - seems to be the way things are going this fall,  However you take what you can get, when you can get it. High on my list of targets was the Hermit Thrush, and luck was with me when I spotted one foraging along the edge of a wood lot.

After Thornapple I headed back to Valley Inn, which was also a little quieter than yesterday, so gave up and headed home.

September 10th 2024

LOCATION: Burlington (Thornapple & Valley Inn)
WEATHER: Sunny, cool start then hot later
Along with a good birding friend, we visited one of my favorite spots in this part of the province for migrating songbirds, in the Fall. It started off quite active with a few Bay-breasted Warblers, a Northern Parula, Yellow-billed Cuckoo and a couple of Red-eyed Vireos passing through, but after that initial bit of activity it went quiet. On the plus side when we got back to our vehicles my friend Cerian found a Praying Mantis, so that was a big plus. Thanks Cerian .. appreciated!!
Next, we went to Valley Inn where there were lots of activity with shorebirds

September 8th 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries (gravel rd)
WEATHER: Sun and cloud but chilly (8C)
Quite an eventful morning when a small flock of mixed species Warblers passed by my staked out location along one of the gravel roads near my house. There were at least 6 species, of which 5 I managed some acceptable shots. The only one I could not get a clean photo of, was a Northern Parula.
Tip of the Day: How to tell the difference between fall coloured Bay-breasted Warblers and a Blackpoll Warblers. The top two upper images show both species. The one on the left is a Bay-breasted and the one on the right is a Blackpoll. The best way to tell the difference between these two almost identical birds, is by the feet colouring - the Blackpoll has yellow feet and with the Bay-breasted, the feet are black

September 6th & 7th 2024

LOCATION: D1:North Dumfries (gravel) and D2:FWR Dickson
WEATHER: Sun and cloud, and a bit cooler
Both Days 1 & 2 have been a little sluggish when it came to Warblers and Vireos, but I did find my first of season Swainson's Thrush. On Day2 I headed to the FWR Dickson trail, where I had heard there was a Lincolns Sparrow hanging out, but on my visit it eluded me, and based on conversations with other birders there, it eluded them too. Oh well that's the nature of the beast as it were !! I did see one of the Tufted Titmouses that have been around all summer, and hopefully they will. like last winter, hang around this winter also.

September 3rd - 5th 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries back roads
WEATHER: Cool starts, but warmed up .. sunny
Back to my usual spots hoping for some more unusual songbirds passing through my area, but it may be a little early yet, as they all seem to be the more common species. However I am still very pleased with the ones I managed to photograph.

One thing I have noticed, as I am sure it's the same every year, is that was very little calling, which I suppose it shouldn't be a surprise, as they are not on territory, so nothing to sing about :)

While out I also kept my eyes open for butterflies and other interesting insects. The quantity of butterflies around has dropped significantly over the last week, as the season progresses and temperatures, especially in the early morning, become cooler.

Nashville Warbler

September 2nd 2024

LOCATION: Guelph Line area
WEATHER: Unseasonably a tad cold (12C), and windy
Along with a great birding friend, Helen,  we headed to the Guelph Line area, which I have found in the past to be a decent location to find and photograph some migrating songbirds, Today, unfortunately, was a tad windy and colder than we would have expected, so consequently, the migrants were staying up really high making it all but impossible to get any shots. Saw several species but no shots!!
What we did find (or should I say more accurately, what Helen found) were lots of Caterpillars, so the day ended up being really good.
Tip of the Day: At this time of year some quite exotic caterpillars can be found reasonably easy - what I do is when walking along a trail or along the roadside, is look for leaves on trees and bushes, that have segments missing where they have been eaten by a caterpillar. Usually I find them on a situation like this on the underside of the leaf,

August 31st 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries gravel road
WEATHER: Another nice day
With non-birding plans quite early in the day I headed to my favorite local gravel road, and did some birding from the drivers seat of my car , At one spot I was fortunate to be at the right place at the right time as several songbirds made their way across my path,

August 27th & 28th 2024

LOCATION: Day1: Guelph Line area; Day2: Hamilton
WEATHER: Very pleasant - sun and cloud
Every day a few more songbirds working their way though this area !!

August 25th & 26th 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries
WEATHER: Sunny and quite warm
Migration continues to expand, so it is really nice to see a few birds that I haven't seen since spring migration, and of course during some trips through the summer to locations up north.

August 20th & 23rd 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries
WEATHER: Seasonal
With fall approaching I am starting to see some migration happening. I am not looking forward to the cooler weather, but I must admit I am looking forward to songbird migration... especially Warblers.

August 14th & 15th 2024

LOCATION:North Dumfries & Kitchener
WEATHER:  Sun & cloud
I was delighted to see a couple of female Baltimore Orioles feeding on our yard Trumpet Vines. Normally at this time of years its only the Ruby-throated Humming birds that indulge, but this year the Hummers have mostly been missing, so nice that Orioles took their place :)

August 9th 2024

Spent a couple of hours along my favorite gravel road close to home with some OK sightings. Looking out for early migrants, but so far nothing showing up.

August 7th & 8th 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries
WEATHER: Sun & cloud
I took a drive around some of the back roads I hadn't visited for a week or two, with not too much in the birding side showing, but I did spot a couple of interesting insects.

August 5th 2024

LOCATION: Woodstock
WEATHER: Sun & cloud, and warm
Along with a good photography friend, and butterfly enthusiast , Helen, we drove down to the Woodstock area, where a very interesting butterfly was showing ... the Bronze Copper - a species neither of us had photographed before. Helens excellent knowledge of this species - knowing the host plant etc, had us locating it within 10 minutes of our arrival, so the day started off superbly!!

Later on that morning we came across the Yellow Garden Spider, which was a female, since it was so large - the insect was around an inch and a half (1.5") from tip to tip so it was quite a monster.

August 1st & 3rd 2024

LOCATION: Day1-Tobermory + Day2-Kitchener
WEATHER: Sunny & hot

A New month and hopefully a few new and decent images to look forward to, Day 1 I woke up, essentially in the middle of the night, unable to sleep, so I thought getup and do a road trip up north somewhere, I decided. literally as I left the house, that Tobermory seems  like a decent idea.

As it turned out it was a bad idea as I literally photographed nothing (except the Egret). I did see a few Warblers .. Black & White, Black-throated Green and a couple of Golden-winged, but glimpses only. Oh well we have good days and we have bad days I suppose!!

Day 2 was a little better, and within a few miles of home too

JULY 2024

July 30th 2024

LOCATION: Close to home
WEATHER: Sun & cloud, and hot !!
Weather was promising to get a bity damp later in the morning, so headed to my favorite local spot, which is only 10mins from home. Nothing too exciting, other than the Rose-breasted Grosbeak female. I could see that she had been feeding on some red berries, but couldn't see where those might have been .. certainly not ion the direct vicinity of my sighting.

July 27th & 28th 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries area, mainly
WEATHER: Sunny and hot for the most part
Over the last two days I have seen and photographed quite a diversity of natures offerings .. bird. frogs, insects, and saw a few other creatures that were too quick for me. One was a Racoon that came down to the creek (likely for a drink on a hot day) that I was sitting beside. Clumsy me made a swing with my camera and clipped an obstruction after which the Coon bolted in the opposite direction, so no shot!!
Tip of the Day: (Birds) Just like any other wild animal, birds have a heightened sense of awareness. They probably know you’re lurking around even before you see them. Fortunately, there are a few tactics you can try to minimize your chances of scaring them away. First, wear something that doesn’t attract attention. You can wear camouflaged hunting clothing or keep it simple with a muted, neutral-colored shirt and pants. Remember that bright colors aren’t just distracting, but birds can also misinterpret them as a sign of danger. Steer clear of bringing along any gear that could alert them.

July 25th 2024

LOCATION: Brant County .. mainly
WEATHER: Bright and sunny
I have been hearing about a local spot, that, yes I have been there before, but not for quite some time. Anyways, this spot is good for seeing Marsh Wrens, and so after a couple of hours there, I could se that it certainly was. Another species spotted was the Common Gallinule. There was a small family group including some youngsters, that were generally staying out of site, but nice to see !!

July 21st 2024

LOCATION: Norfolk County
WEATHER: Hot, hot. HOT
Today was a primarily butterfly day, and along with a good friend, who is a very knowledgeable person when it comes to these critters, we headed down to check out a couple of places in the area between Long Point and Woodstock.
First spot was at Yarmouth Heritage where we had hoped to see a local rarity here .. the Harvester, but alas no luck, but did see quite a few others. Next stop was along a dirt road near St Williams, and again saw quite a few decent Butterflies.
Tip of the Day: I always find that when looking for butterflies, or dragonflies, they can be really difficult to get close enough for a standard macro shot, so a longer lens is more useful than a Macro Lens. For most of these images below I used the Canon RF 200-800. For smaller insects that don't move too much, then I use the RF100mm Macro. Another lens I often use is the RF100-500. Happy shooting !!

July 20th & 23rd 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries Gravel Road
WEATHER: Day1 - sunny Day2 - cloudy
Todays post is split between a couple of days that I spent along one of my favorite roads near Kitchener, with limited success. I have been spending a bit of time along there looking for a couple of rarities that have been reported there, but I neither saw nor heard either one. Rarities are a Clay-coloured Sparrow and an unlikely Sedge Wren. Nature of the beast I suppose ... some you find and some you don't, but I plan to keep checking.

Belted Kingfisher
;As I have mentioned a few times before, one of my favorite local drives is only a few miles from my house, and yet again it produced some decent birds (and a decent butterfly).

Highlights for me was mainly the Belted Kingfisher. I staked this fella out for about three hours, and eventually he landed on a decent perch that wasn't too far away I could hear him almost constantly and saw him flipping from spot to spot, so I figured it was only a matter of time until he gave me a decent shot. However during that stakeout I managed a few other visitors to my chosen spot, so it was all good !!

July 17th 2024

LOCATION : mainly Urquhart Butterfly Gardens, Dundas
WEATHER: Sun and cloud, and pretty hot
Todays plan was to team up with a good photo friend (Cerian), and head down to Urquhart Butterfly Gardens in Dundas . This is a fantastic location for a chance to see and photograph a few butterflies. The City of Dundas has done an amazing job of cultivating this, free to the public, flower garden next to the Desjardin Canal, where they have planted flowers that generally attract butterflies, as well as lots of other insects. The hope was to find a Hummingbird Moth, which is often spotted here, but alas we were unlucky in that respect.
On the way back home I drooped in at some marshland along Safari Road where I was hoping to see a Marsh Wren, and was delighted when one popped up for a second or two.

July 15th & 16th 2024

LOCATION: Kitchener area
WEATHER: Generally hot but rainy
Just a few dragonflies, which aren't too hard to find in the hot damp days around here

July 10th - 13th 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries ... mostly
WEATHER: Generally sunny & hot
With the warmer weather., bugs are starting to take over photo subjects

July 6th - 9th 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries Gravel Road
WEATHER: Hot .. all days
Over the last few days I haven't ventured too far - We have a gravel road just outside the city limits that can be quite good, so over the last few days I have spent a few hours there, but only in the morning - usually between 8 & 12 am. The area has some awesome mixed habitat - forest, marsh, meadow and general scrub, so hosts quite a good variety of birds and bugs.
Tip of the Day: Personally I like to do birding by driving along back roads, stopping at likely looking habitat, but stopping only at a spot that has some likely open perches, then ...  have a listen *using Merlin and then trying to manipulate a shot or two. The tip is make sure you have a perch chosen that would work photographically, and pre-focus at that point, and be ready !! !!

July 4th 2024

LOCATION: Guelph Line and area
WEATHER: Sunny and quite hot
I hadn't done much birding in this area for a couple of weeks, so thought .. why not ? I am glad I did as there were a couple of decent sightings including one that had been a target for the last couple of weeks, albeit with no sightings .. the Eastern Towhee. I came across him almost immediately, so the day started off good. The one bird I usually find along this road is the Blackburnian Warbler, but today .. no sightings and no calls either !!

LOCATION: North Dumfries
WEATHER: Sun, cloud, but cooler
Both days touring the local back roads in North Dumfries .. only a few miles from home so keeping the gas costs in check

JUNE 2024

June 28th & 30th 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries (again)
WEATHER: Cool, with occasional sun
Today was a bit on the cool side of pleasant, and although I was hoping for a decent butterfly sightings, it was just too cool. On the plus side (albeit very minor) there was a few birds around. You take what you can get !!
Tip of the Day: Macro:  When looking for insects, and it is a bit cooler and/or a bit windy .. look for a sheltered spot out out of the wind and hopefully with a little sun. Bugs tend to home in on spots like that.

June 27th 2024

LOCATION: Luther Marsh area
WEATHER: Seasonally cooler, but sun and cloud
This used to be quite a favorite area of mine, but its been a few years since I checked it out. Being at a loose end this morning I thought .. why not? Its not too far from home at 1.25 hours and you never know what can be found. The main targets were either the Sedge Wren or the Marsh Wren (both being reported on-line) but today Merlin picked up neither even though the habitat looked perfect .. oh well!! On the plus side there were a few songbirds, as well as lots of butterflies .. so a good day !!

June 25th & 26th 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries & Kitchener
WEATHER: Sun & cloud
Birding has been a little flat recently,  and bugging has been a little tough as well (somewhat), so I decided that I should give a few of my favorite local birding spots a few tries. If I get some birds great, but if its not good I can see what shows up on the insect side !! As it happened it wasn't terrible on either count :)
Tip of the Day: Some novice macro shooters will mistakenly correlate field macro to shooting fish in a barrel. Since bugs are everywhere, it should be easy, right? Not quite. While warm weather can bring plenty of subjects into view, it doesn’t mean capturing stunning close-ups will be easy. Try to mentally relax and physically slow your pace. You’ll find more subjects, hold your camera steadier, and ultimately produce better images.

June 23rd 2024

LOCATION: Cambridge Butterfly Conservancy
WEATHER: n/a
It was a friends birthday so we though a day out at the Butterfly Conservancy in Cambridge would be a great opportunity to hang out and for us both to get a few photographs of a creature we are both very  keen to get on!!
The faculty is very well laid out (other some corners were poor in light making some of the exposures up in some very ISO ranges) However there were also lots of spots where the lighting was perfect.

June 22nd 2024

LOCATION: Local roads close to home
WEATHER: Hot  and hot !!
Late afternoon I took a drive around some local wetlands  looking for some insect subjects, and if I was lucky maybe a bird or two, but nothing popped up on the bird side, but thankfully I did find some butterflies and dragonflies.
The highlight was the Clouded Sulphur - I have seen the occasional one over the last week or so, but they always seemed to be buzzing along on the road to somewhere else more interesting.

June 17th-20th 2024

LOCATION: Local back roads
WEATHER: Hot & sultry
With the weather moving to hot and hotter, its this time of year where I switch to shooting insects, which are somewhat more available and photogenic. Today, as have been the last couple of days, very insect available.

June 16th 2024

LOCATION: Flamborough area
WEATHER: Cooler start but heated up quickly later
I took a drive down some roads that I hadn't been along for quite some time, with a little success (minor). Highlight was finding an Alder Flycatcher that popped up and gave me a few poses. Alders are tricky as they very closely resemble the Willow Flycatcher, but the call is unmistakably different which it was in this case ... thanks to Merlin :)

June 14th & 15th 2024

LOCATION: Day1-Skunks Misery; Day2-N. Dumfries
WEATHER: Typical spring days .. a bit of sun & cloud
Not much to say  .. just typical spring days with a bit of mixed action. Skunks was a bit slow, but always a nice place to visit.
Tip of the day: A basic one today ... stay focused, be prepared, and as always if you are driving between spots and looking for birds, pick your spot where you stop your vehicle ie look for a perch that would work for you and keep those fingers crossed !!

June 13th 2024

LOCATION: Flamborough area
WEATHER: Cooler start then hot (30C)
On impulse I headed down to the Flamborough area this morning. It's been an area I used to frequent quite a lot a few years ago, but kinda moved on a bit I suppose. Now I wish I had spent more time there and I certainly will be moving forward. Not shown or photographed, but heard strongly, were several other species including Ovenbird, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Northern Waterthrush, Alder Flycatcher and a few others ...  The big surprise was the Canada Warbler !!
On the negative side, I didn't see too many butterflies .. lots of Dragonflies, but not so many BF's.

June 11th 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries .. the usual route!
WEATHER: Generally sunny (20C)
My plan today was only to be out for a couple of hours, so I took my drive around a few spots pretty close to home .. with some minor success ,, Highlight was a very cooperative Indigo Bunting that posed nicely for me.

June 9th 2024

LOCATION: St William's
WEATHER: Sun and Cloud, but quite cool (seasonally)
Another day out with my photography buddy..  Helen. With birding we make a great team - Helen has excellent hearing and exceptional bird call recognition skills. Today we planned to a bit of birding and a lot of butterfly chasing. This area down near Long Point has some superb habitat for butterflies, and we have visited it several times over the years.
It was a little cooler than normal for the season, and not a lot of flowers out yet, but still quite a lot of butterflies around, but some species eg the American Copper (which we normally find in decent numbers) were not to be seen .. although we did catch a glimpse of one before it disappeared.
Tip of the Day: Butterflies are easiest to spot during calm, sunny conditions around the middle of day – this is when they're most active. This isn't a hard and fast rule though. You'll see them in the early evening on hot days and on warm, cloudy days too.

June 8th 2024

LOCATION: Guelph Arboretum
WEATHER: Sunny, but cooler
Along with a good birding and bugging photography friend, we headed to the Arboretum in Guelph, which has some great habitat for butterflies. We were hoping for some more interesting species than we have been finding around here, and after a couple of hours we had photographed some interesting subjects.
Today, I brought the 200-800 Canon lens, which I initially purchased as my trail walking lens for birds, but today I tried it out as a butterfly/dragonfly lens and found it to be excellent .. way better than I would have suspected. At 200mm I could get really close around 27" ish (tip of lens to subject) which almost filled the frame on a butterfly. So going forward ... I will be using this lens, and save my 100mm Macro for small insects and studio work.
** As always ... click on any image to show full size. Also by hovering your cursor over any image will provide a titl

June 6th & 7th 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries
WEATHER: Sun and cloud
There is a back road (gravel) fairly close to my house that usually has a good mixture of birds and bugs, so always worth a drive around looking and listening. The highlight today was discovering this really large dragonfly, that turned out to be Twin-spotted Spiketail ... I species I hadn't even heard about ... so I was pretty pumped  :)
Tip of the Day: Typically dragonflies look for three basics elements: sun, perching structure and water, so when looking for these beautiful subjects, these 3 elements are important.

June 4th & 5th 2024

LOCATION: North Dumfries & Brant County
WEATHER: Quite warm
Spent an hour or two foraging in a local meadow looking for a few insects. These days I seem to be taking more interest in Butterflies, but it still a little early in the season, so pickings are a little slim .. but it should pick up soon.

June 2nd & 3rd 2024

LOCATION: Day1-Algonquin area : Day2-NorthDumfries
WEATHER: Typical spring mornings
Birds are getting harder to find now that they are actively nesting, so on days like this I tend to flip to insects and whatever else is around.

Pretty much all my life I have had an interest in nature photography albeit in, off and on, phases of interest. Around 18 years ago, I found myself, again, getting that nature bug, and I am now, especially since I retired just over 8 years ago, very passionate about  wildlife & wildlife photography.

Enough about me ...             I hope that you enjoy my ramblings and the occasional  decent  image.
